STAR FORMATION IN THE HOSTS OF HIGH-z QSOs: EVIDENCE FROM SPITZER PAH DETECTIONS
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present Spitzer rest frame mid-infrared spectroscopy of 12 z 2 millimeter-bright type 1 QSOs, selected from unlensed and lensed QSO samples and covering a range of AGN optical luminosities L5100 1⁄4 1045Y10 erg s . On top of the AGN continuum, we detect PAH emission from luminous star formation in nine objects individually, as well as in the composite spectrum for the full sample. PAH luminosity and rest frame far-infrared luminosity correlate and extend a similar correlation for lower luminosity local QSOs. This provides strong evidence for intense star formation in the hosts of these millimeter-bright QSOs, sometimes exceeding 1000M yr 1 and dominating their rest frame far-infrared emission. The PAH-based limit on star formation rates is lower for luminous z 2 QSOs that are not preselected for their millimeter emission. Partly dependent on systematic changes of the AGN dust covering factor and the dust spectral energy distribution of the AGN proper, the spectral energy distributions of millimeterfaint high-z QSOs may be AGN dominated out to rest frame far-infrared wavelengths. Toward the most luminous high-z QSOs, there is a flattening of the relation between star formation and AGN luminosity that is observed for lower redshift QSOs. No QSO in our sample has a PAH-measured star formation rate in excess of 3000M yr . Subject headinggs: galaxies: active — galaxies: starburst — infrared: galaxies Online material: color figures

Mid-Infrared Spectroscopic Properties of Ultra-Luminous Infrared Quasars
We analyse mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopic properties for 19 ultra-luminous infrared quasars (IR QSOs) in the local universe based on the spectra from the Infrared Spectrograph on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The MIR properties of IR QSOs are compared with those of optically-selected Palomar-Green QSOs (PG QSOs) and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). The average MIR spectral featu...
متن کاملMid - infrared Spitzer spectra of X - ray selected Type 2 QSOs : QSO 2 s are not ULIRGs
We have performed a spectroscopic study of 7 Type 2 QSOs using the mid-infrared spectrometer IRS on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. These are (to our knowledge) the first mid-IR spectra of X-ray selected QSO2s taken. The objects have been selected according to their high intrinsic luminosities and column densities in the X-rays. Their spectra strongly differ from template spectra of Type 2 A...
متن کاملSpitzer Detection of PAH and Silicate Dust Features in the Mid - Infrared Spectra of z ∼ 2 Ultraluminous Infrared
We report the initial results from a Spitzer GO-1 program to obtain low resolution, mid-infrared spectra of infrared luminous galaxies at z ∼ 1 − 2. This paper presents the spectra of eight sources observed with the Spitzer InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS). Of the eight spectra, six have mid-IR spectral features, either emission from Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) or silicate absorption. Base...
متن کاملPAH emission and star formation in the host of the z ∼ 2 . 56 Cloverleaf QSO
We report the first detection of the 6.2μm and 7.7μm infrared ‘PAH’ emission features in the spectrum of a high redshift QSO, from the Spitzer-IRS spectrum of the Cloverleaf lensed QSO (H1413+117, z∼2.56). The ratio of PAH features and rest frame far-infrared emission is the same as in lower luminosity star forming ultraluminous infrared galaxies and in local PG QSOs, supporting Max-Planck-Inst...
متن کاملMolecular Gas in Infrared-excess, Optically-selected Qsos and the Connection with Infrared Luminous Galaxies
The initial results of a millimeter (CO) survey of infrared-excess, optically-selected quasars from the Palomar-Green (PG) Bright Quasar Survey (BQS) with redshifts in the range 0.04 < z < 0.17 are presented. These observations represent the first step towards establishing with a complete sample whether or not quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) reside in molecular gas-rich galaxies, as well as toward...
